CityFibre's FTTP Project and our involvement as CG Utilities

One remarkable project that showcases CG Utilities' expertise and dedication is their involvement in the CityFibre FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) rollout in Swindon. CityFibre's visionary £40 million investment aimed to bring high-speed broadband to the town of Swindon, and they entrusted VolkerSmart Technologies of the Volker Group as the primary contractor to make this ambitious dream a reality.

The journey began in October 2020, all targets were achieved within the last three years, month upon month delivering PN’s in the double figures so efficiently there is a possibility of the build being extended out from Swindon.

We played a pivotal role as a Tier 2 contractor, working under Volker Smart Technologies. Our responsibilities encompassed excavating a staggering 430,000 meters of new trenches in Swindon. This extensive groundwork was a crucial step towards enabling high-speed broadband access for residents and businesses in the area.

The team's duties extended beyond mere trench digging. We installed ducting, executed the delicate process of fibre optic cable blowing, splicing, and rigorously tested the entire network. These efforts represented a crucial phase in the broader scheme of delivering high-speed internet infrastructure.

We minimised disruption to local residents to 17 days

One particularly noteworthy aspect of this project was the team's innovative approach. Wherever feasible, the teams aimed for a combined installation strategy. This ingenious concept adopted by all three organisations merged new underground trenched duct networks with new and existing underground and overhead infrastructure. By embracing this hybrid installation technique, we were able to significantly expedite the project's completion while minimising disruption to local residents.

The comprehensive services we provided in this groundbreaking project included:

  • Surveying

  • Civil Engineering

  • Cabling Installation

  • Splicing

  • Testing and Commissioning

Special Engineering Difficulties and How We Navigated Them

In 2022, we faced a unique challenge in Swindon. We were tasked with overcoming "Special Engineering Difficulties" during the installation of new infrastructure. The aim was to provide faster broadband access to neighbouring homes and businesses.

The project was further complicated by discovering historic tramlines in the vicinity. To address this intricate situation, we devised a strategic excavation plan that carefully navigated a narrow gap between historical structures, including canal tunnels and ageing infrastructure that stretched for over half a kilometre. One of the most remarkable aspects of this endeavour was the speed and efficiency with which it was executed. The road, which could have been closed for a prolonged period, was disrupted for only 17 days, allowing the fibre project to proceed without significant delays. This quick resolution was a testament to our team's adaptability and problem-solving capabilities, setting a new standard for managing unique and complex circumstances.

We have etched a remarkable reputation as a specialist contractor that combines a passion for technology with a commitment to bettering communities. Through the exceptional work in the CityFibre FTTP project and solution to Special Engineering Difficulties in Swindon, we are proud to be considered a key player in shaping the technological landscape of the UK.

Special thanks go to CityFibre and Volker Group for giving us the opportunity to be part of such an amazing project that essentially gives back to the community of Swindon.
